"designers are creating an excess of styles for women with larger chests"
As a friend of women and Savitude, I thought you'd be interested in the analysis that we have completed.
we were curious …
… to find out if designers created collections for models or real women. We used our technology to analyze the Fall 2019 shows to determine which body shapes and proportions were flattered by each designer label.
Following are the overall results. To download the complete report, scroll down to the button.
what we found
These are the results for New York Week featuring fashions for Fall 2019. The first image highlights the two body shapes where the ratio of silhouettes to the total matches the number of women in the population. These are Hourglass and Triangle shapes.
Body Shape Legend - see below
The following image highlights the body shapes that are under-represented on the runways. These are the Rectangle, Bottom Hourglass, Diamond and Oval. It is interesting to note that women with larger mid-sections are reliably under-represented.
The final image highlights those body shapes that are over produced. Generally speaking, New York designers are focusing on embracing designs for larger busted women; hourglass women are also well-represented. It is interesting that bottom hourglass women are generally under-represented, yet spoon is over-represented. Both have larger hips and well-defined waists. I attributed this to designers opting to avoid fitted clothing for bottom hourglass women and instead went for clothes that smoothed over the high hips of the spoon and triangle shapes.
- Using our database of women's body shapes and the AI technology that powers Savitude, we analyzed New York, London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week collections for body shape diversity and found a lack of styles and silhouettes designed to fit and flatter normal women's body shapes.
- While our technology typically serves retail buyers as they seek to balance their assortments, and designers, who may not realize the imbalance of who is able to wear their collections, this data speaks to an ongoing issue in the industry at large - a lack of attention to real women's bodies and realistic clothing for today's population.
Can I tell you more - including what the data shows about which body shapes are least likely to be addressed by fashion designers?
We are always available to talk further.
